Pigeon defense – This is why you should protect your solar system from nesting birds with BirdBlocker:

Pigeons are cavity nesters and therefore begin breeding under newly constructed photovoltaic systems shortly after installation. Once the pigeons have settled under the PV system, they stay permanently.

  • The nests under the modules disrupt the natural ventilation of the solar system. This results in a lower energy yield and an increased risk of fire due to so-called hotspots.
  • Contamination of the solar system and the electrical cables by bird droppings causes malfunctions in the module and even the complete failure of the system.
  • Since the fastening with the stainless steel clips does not damage the PV module, the warranty remains valid!
BirdBlocker is not 100% protection against birds or other animals building nests under the solar system. However, BirdBlocker hinders and disturbs birds and other animals when they try to get under the solar system. In response, they then look for other undisturbed nesting sites.

Step 2: Before you order

2Before you order

BirdBlocker products provide reliable protection against intruding birds. To optimize this protection, it is crucial to use the correct length of BirdBlocker. Since design differences are specific to the application, it is important to measure BirdBlocker from the bottom of the module frame to the lowest point of the roof covering before ordering.

For optimal protection, the height-specifications are as follows:

BB85 – 45 mm to 80 mm
BB125 – 80 mm to 115 mm
BB200 – 115 mm to 190 mm

Important: Installing a BirdBlocker that is either too long or too short will affect the functionality of the system.

Tip: BirdBlocker is available as a C-version, where all clips for conventional frames are pre-assembled. This is not only practical, but also saves a lot of time and money on every job - both with conventional and box frames.

Step 3: What do I need

3What do I need

To install BirdBlocker you need:

  • ruler or tape measure

Step 2: Before you order
Step 4: The right clips

4The right clips

BirdBlocker clips fit the vast majority of solar panels. In recent years we have seen a sharp rise in the popularity of the box design for the short sides of the panel. Depending on the panels you are using, your installation may require box style clips. BirdBlocker offers compatibility with all common solar panel frames on the market today. To ensure a quick and permanent installation, check your panel before ordering.

Step 3: What do I need
Step 5: Safety notice

5Safety note

Please put your safety first! Make sure you have the necessary skills, experience, qualifications and equipment to carry out this work safely and in compliance with applicable regulations and laws. The BirdBlocker system is easy to install, but the common application area should not be underestimated. Under no circumstances will BirdBlocker be liable for the safety of users, the quality of the installation or compliance with the legal framework. We recommend that BirdBlocker installations are carried out by competent, qualified and licensed installers.

The BirdBlocker product warranty applies only to the product and the quality of the materials.

Step 7: Start the installation

7Start the installation

Once all safety and climbing devices have been removed, BirdBlocker installation is started in the furthest corner of the access point. BirdBlocker installation is done from the starting point towards the access point. Complete each row with a corner before installing the last strip; this will ensure there is enough length to create a clean, tight corner.

Step 8: Cutting inside corners

8Cutting inside corners

The quality of the materials allows uninterrupted cutting of the corners:

  • Straight cut in the rear segment of the strip.
  • Add an additional bracket before and after the corner for additional stability.

Tip: Due to the material, we strongly recommend using garden shears like those from our starter pack or similar. The rounded edge cuts better, cleaner and easier than straight tin snips or cutters.

For outside corners:

  • Miter the back segment of the strip.
  • Add an additional bracket before and after the corner for additional stability.

Step 10: Mounting systems

10mounting systems

It is crucial to create a continuous enclosure with BirdBlocker. Under the frame ends of the mounting system, Birdblocker provides continuous protection:

  • Cut the rear segment of the BirdBlocker strip twice with two or three needles in between (depending on the width of the mounting frame)
  • Cut the needles horizontally as close as possible around the mounting frame
  • Add an additional clip for extra stability

Step 11: Attaching the BirdBlocker to conventional frames

11Attaching the BirdBlocker to conventional frames

  • Place the BB tool behind the clip and secure it with your finger to prevent it from moving.
  • Hold the BirdBlocker parallel to the frame
  • Slide the strip under the solar module until the clips hook behind the bottom edge of the frame
  • Pull the strip completely onto the aluminum lip
  • Repeat the process for the next clip until the entire strip is hooked at the bottom edge.

Tip: BirdBlocker can be installed by hand - we strongly advise against this. The BB tool prevents injuries, makes installation much faster and offers more grip on the module frame thanks to better control.

Step 10: Mounting systems
Step 12: Installing BirdBlocker on box-type frames

12Installation of BirdBlocker on box-type frames

If your frame (usually the "short" sides) does not have a lip/flange on the bottom, you are working with a box-shaped frame. Your modules' datasheet will usually show a cross-section of your frame design. For frame designs, you will need additional brackets for the correct height (usually 30mm or 35mm) and width (8-13mm or 14-18mm).

You always need 4 clips per half meter.

Step 13: Connecting the strips

13Connecting the strips

After the system is completely closed, only the opening between the needles remains between two strips:

Variant 1:

  • Diagonal attachment of a connecting strip (one side above, one side below the bridge)
  • Close the zipper until it forms a stable connection between the bridges/strips
  • cut off excess length
  • Rotate the locking mechanism backwards for a clean look.

Variant 2:

  • Connecting without cable ties

Step 14: General considerations

14General considerations

  • In our experience, the behaviour of animals in one geographical region does not correspond to their behaviour in other regions.
  • Every nook and cranny is exploited. Birds can be cunning, stubborn and determined. Every opening in the bird screen is an invitation for trouble.
  • BirdBlocker is not resistant to martens, rats, etc. However, our experience is that the presence of birds/eggs/chicks can be enough of a reason for them to become problematic. Bird-proofing removes the incentive for vermin and helps keep your facility safe.
